“Broom Closet”

The act of broom-making requires you to be fully present, bringing a more profound, almost meditative intention to the process. Constructed while in residence at Elsewhere Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina, “Broom Closet” repositions a traditionally utilitarian space, the broom closet, and objects, the besom and whisk broom, as tools for spiritual restoration and ritual. Keeping in line with the Elsewhere Museum sustainability requirements for new work created by artists in residence, the lamp, mirrors, cushion, pallet box, and “closet” were objects found inside of the former thrift store turned museum and artist residency. The turkey wing brooms were made daily during my 5 weeks in residence. The pine branch besom I created as part of a performance during the debut of new works by artists in residence.
